Aston Villa 1-2 Chelsea: Full Frank Lampard press conference

Chelsea boosted their hopes of Champions League qualification after quick-fire goals from Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud earned a 2-1 comeback success at struggling Aston Villa.

With Manchester United and Tottenham sharing the points on Friday night, coupled with back-to-back defeats for Arsenal inside three days, Champions League football for 2020/21 is looking like a realistic possibility for the west London outfit.

And they took a huge step towards sealing a top-four spot at Villa Park.

Quickfire second-half goals from Christian Pulisic and Olivier Giroud turned the game in Chelsea’s favour after they had trailed at the break.

The result moves them five points clear of the Red Devils and just three behind Leicester City in third.

Such was the importance of the victory that defender Antonio Rudiger took to Instagram to share a message with supporters.

His post was seen by Ziyech who reacted by replying with a clapping emoji, giving Rudiger and co his seal of approval.

Ziyech will be one of two new arrivals at Stamford Bridge next month after the Blues confirmed the sigining of Timo Werner last week.

Head coach Frank Lampard admits the double deal will increase the pressure on his shoulders.

“Yeah it probably does, and I get that,” said Lampard ahead of his side’s trip to Aston Villa.

Chelsea have announced the sale of Mario Pasalic to Atalanta.

The midfielder has been on loan with the Serie A side this season and has really impressed during his time with the club.

The 25-year-old has been a regular in the side throughout the campaign, netting five Serie A goals and adding another five assists to his name.

Atalanta have been one of the teams of the season through Europe, and they have exercised the buy option in the loan, with the Blues set to receive £13.5million for the transfer.

Frank Lampard told how to unlock Timo Werner at Chelsea as defender reveals role in £47.5m deal. Latest Chelsea news includes comments from defender Antonio Rudiger on £47.5m summer signing Timo Werner, the Germany international will arrive at Stamford Bridge next week.

Antonio Rudiger has revealed his role in convincing Timo Werner to join Chelsea.

After weeks of speculation, the Blues confirmed the signing of the 24-year-old Germany international last Thursday after paying his £47.5million release clause at Bundesliga outfit RB Leipzig.

Werner had been heavily linked with a move to Liverpool, however, the Reds decided not to go in for the forward and it is the west London outfit who have pounced for his signature.

He becomes the club’s second signing ahead of the summer transfer window, with Hakim Ziyech set to arrive at Stamford Bridge on July 1 from Ajax.

Rudiger has played alongside Werner at club as well as at international level down the years and has admitted that he spoke to his compatriot a lot during the lockdown.

“I did speak to him before because we have known each other for a long time,” Rudiger told the club’s official website. “We spoke a lot during the lockdown and he told me he was interested in coming to England.

“Of course then I did my bit, what I had to do.

“I would say he’s a quiet, humble guy, always ready to do better. I hope he adapts very quickly when he comes because as we all know this competition is different than others.”

With 32 goals to his name across all competitons for RB Leipzig this season, Werner could be the signing that helps Chelsea mount a title challenge next season.

And in terms of how head coach Frank Lampard can unlock Werner next season, Rudiger has raised similarities to Leicester City’s Jamie Vardy.

“Like everyone, I’m very excited that he’s chosen Chelsea and I’m looking forward to working with him,” the defender added. “I’ve known him since he was 17 and he did very good in the past few years.

“He can be very important for us.

Timo Werner signs for Chelsea

Timo Werner’s transfer to Chelsea has been confirmed

Chelsea have completed the signing of Timo Werner from RB Leipzig for a fee of £47.5m as the Blues secured their second high-profile addition of the summer.

They fought off competition from Liverpool to sign the 24-year-old, who is expected to slot straight into Frank Lampard’s side, along with fellow new signing Hakim Ziyech.

“His development was just “wow”. In his first season, everything was new for him in men’s football but then he started scoring more goals and of course with that comes confidence. He had very good coaches who believed in him and worked with him.

“He’s a really big threat to defenders. RB Leipzig is a more counter-attacking team but in terms of attacking the defensive line, he’s similar to Vardy.

“He has a lot of pace and if the defender makes a mistake and loses the ball, then he goes!’low @Chelsea_f

Chelsea are allegedly set to launch a £50 million offer for Manchester United goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

The 23-year-old star has starred in his debut Premier League term on loan at Sheffield United, keeping the joint-most top-flight clean sheets this season.

He is a Manchester United academy graduate but is yet to make an appearance for the senior team.

The Sun say the Blues are preparing an audacious attempt to sign Dean from their Premier League rivals.

Kepa Arrizabalaga, who joined the west Londoners in a £71m world-record fee for a goalkeeper from Athletic Bilbao back in 2018, was dropped by head coach Frank Lampard in February.

And in spite of regaining his starting place, the shot-stopper’s Stamford Bridge future remains uncertain.

Dean wants to play regular football next season, something which might not be guaranteed at the Red Devils with David de Gea between the sticks.

And it is believed Chelsea are hoping UEFA Champions League football could sway Henderson.

The club dropped points in pursuit of the top four with a 1-1 draw at Tottenham Hotspur as Bruno Fernandes’ penalty cancelled out the Netherlands international Steven Bergwijn’s opener on Friday.

Steven easily glided past defender Harry Maguire before his shot went straight through David de Gea.

Meantime, Chelsea have reportedly rejected an offer from Juventus which would have seen Jorginho join the Italian giants and Miralem Pjanic move in the opposite direction.

The Old Lady continue to be touted with an interest in Jorginho, who has scored seven times in 37 matches for Frank Lampard’s side during the 2019-20 campaign.

According to Calciomercato, the Serie A side offered Chelsea the chance to sign Pjanic as part of a swap for the Italo-Brazilian, but the Premier League club knocked back the approach.

Chelsea are leading Manchester United and Real Madrid in the race to sign £90m-rated Bayer Leverkusen star Kai Havertz this summer, according to reports via the Express.

Havertz came through the youth ranks at Leverkusen and has developed into one of the most exciting young footballers in Europe since breaking into the first team set-up back in 2016 – when he became the youngest player to play in the Bundesliga aged just 16.

The 21-year-old has now amassed 44 goals and 31 assists in his 146 appearances with 16 of those goals coming this season so it’s no surprise the youngster has been attracting attention from some of Europe’s most powerful clubs.

It looks like the German international could be heading to England as the Express are citing Italian journalist Nicolo Schira as claiming that Chelsea are leading Manchester United, Bayern Munich and Real Madrid in the race to sign Havertz.

The Blues have already been busy in the window with deals in place to sign Hakim Ziyech from Ajax and Timo Werner from RB Leipzig so it appears Frank Lampard is pushing to secure his third signing in Havertz. It would be a major coup if the west Londoners could pull it off but there is still plenty of time for the likes of Man Utd to step-up their interest and snatch Havertz from under Chelsea’s nose.

Ole Gunner Solskjaer is expected to be active in the market this summer as he looks to build a squad capable of competing for major honours next season and Havertz would certainly be an exciting addition if United could win the race for his signature.

The youngster has two years left on his contract and is showing no sign he’s going to sign an extension so Leverkusen are being tipped to cash in with the Express suggesting they will sell if at least £90m is put on the table.

However, the newspaper says that figure could drop to around £70m if the German outfit fail to qualify for the Champions league. Leverkusen currently sit two points behind fourth-placed Borussia Monchengladbach with one game remaining so Chelsea and United will hope they miss out so they can bag Havertz at a knock-down price.

The youngster is predominantly an attacking central midfielder but he is also comfortable playing out wide or off the striker so he’d give Lampard or Solskjaer a versatile option in the final third if either club manages to get a deal agreed.
