Thomas Tuchel take team decision on meeting with Lukaku - full text speech

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is standing fully behind Thomas Tuchel amidst all the drama surrounding Romelu Lukaku and agrees with the manager’s decision to fine the player.

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has the full backing of owner Roman Abramovich amid the ugly fallout from Romelu Lukaku‘s recent unsanctioned interview.

The Belgian striker sent shockwaves around the club last week when footage emerged of him complaining that he was “not happy” with life under Tuchel and that he would’ve stayed at Inter Milan had his former club offered him a new contract.

He was subsequently left at home for Chelsea’s clash with Liverpool on Sunday, with Tuchel insisting there was “too much noise” around the 28-year-old to include him.

Various reports claimed that Lukaku’s teammates were completely shocked by the comments, which appeared to come out of nowhere.

It’s understood that Tuchel discussed the issue with a number of senior players in the squad, who agreed that action needed to be taken against the £97.5 million man.

Lukaku apologised to the manager when the two met at the club’s training ground on Monday, and publicly apologised to Chelsea’s supporters on Tuesday, releasing a video via the club’s website.

“I’m sorry for the upset I have caused,” he said. “It’s up to me now to restore your trust, and I’ll do my best to show my commitment.”

For the moment the issue appears to have been put to bed, but not before the striker was fined £417,000 (€500,000) for his comments.

While a number of players within the squad thought the fine was excessive, Chelsea’s owner felt it was justified and is pleased with the way Tuchel has handled the situation.

It demonstrates how highly the German is rated by Chelsea’s hierarchy, especially given Abramovich’s history of siding with disgruntled players throughout the years.

Lukaku returned to training this week and is now in line to face Tottenham Hotspur in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final this evening.
