Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari has announced the appointment of new top military officers following the dismissal of his predecessors.
General Leo Irabor has been appointed chief security officer; General Ibrahim Attahiru appointed as Chief of Army Staff.
Rear Admiral A.Z Gambo has been appointed Chief of Naval Staff and Air-Vice Marshal I.O Alao as Chief of Air Staff.
Major General Ibrahim Attahiru replaces General Tukur Buratai, the Chief of Army Staff.
General Attahiru is a native of Kaduna State in northern Nigeria.
Prior to his appointment, Major General Attahiru was the Commander of the 82nd Infantry Division in the Nigerian Army.
He once led the fight against Boko Haram but was ousted by General Tukur Buratai in 2017 after a series of militant attacks in which 50 people were killed while praying at a mosque.
Buratai has already promised to arrest Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau, dead or alive.
He was replaced by General Nicholas Rogers.
Major General Leo Irabor – Chief of Defense Staff
Major General Leo Irabor, who was appointed by Buhari’s chief of staff, once held the position of commander of Operation Lafiya Dole, an anti-Boko Haram force in northeastern Nigeria.
He was removed in 2017 and replaced by Major General I Attahiru.
Irabor later became the commander-in-chief of the Lake Chad Joint Task Force, which has been battling Boko Haram in Nigeria, Niger, Cameroon, Benin and Chad.
Air-Vice Marshal I.O Amao – Chief of Staff
Air-Vice Marshal Isiaka Oladayo Amao has been replaced by Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar as the new Chief of Air Staff.
The senior air force officer has received air force training in India, China and Pakistan.
Rear Admiral A.Z Gambo – Chief of Naval Staff
Prior to his appointment as Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo was an expert in maritime security and intelligence.
He is a native of Nasarawa State in the North Central Region. The senior officer received naval training in Jaji and South Africa.
