Mikel Arteta has released Arsenal squad ahead of the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash with Liverpool.
Arsenal will finally play the first of their two Carabao Cup semi-final legs with Liverpool tonight as Mikel Arteta hunts down the second trophy of his reign as manager.
Plenty of controversy has surrounded the postponement of last week’s clash, with Jurgen Klopp admitting that a series of false positive Covid tests in the squad led to the cancellation.
The German admitted as much after the Reds beat Shrewsbury in the FA Cup on Sunday, revealing Trent Alexander-Arnold was the only positive test in the most recent round.
“We had last week a proper outbreak and it showed up that we had a lot of false positives but the rules are like they are so all these players who are false positives couldn’t play,” he told his press conference.
“The only real positive came from Trent Alexander-Arnold and all the rest were false positives.”
One positive to come from the saga for the Gunners is that the second leg will now be played at the Emirates Stadium, potentially giving them an edge in the second leg.
But in terms of the health of his own squad, Arteta remained coy in his pre-match press conference, hinting that players will be missing.
“It’s extremely volatile and uncertain. I don’t know what the situation we’re gonna have today is, it’s different to the situation we had yesterday certainly,” he said.
“Obviously I cannot get into any detail with that but it’s what it is. In the last week or so we lost so many players for many reasons and we are trying to adapt to that and use the players that we have and make the most out of it.”
It may well be assumed that Arsenal will have the same squad at their disposal that was beaten by Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup on Sunday, one that saw Granites Xhaka miss out with Covid.
With that in mind football.london looks at the squad Arteta will have at his disposal tonight.
