Juventus and Chelsea chief meet to finalize Federico Chiesa transfer deal, as star sends messages to club

All the very latest concerning Chelsea’s chase for Juventus star Federico Chiesa, with the Blues and Liverpool reportedly set to battle for the Italy international

One name that continues to be linked to Chelsea is Juventus’ Federico Chiesa.

The former Fiorentina forward’s exploits at Euro 2020 with Italy coupled with his form shown against the Blues in the Champions League earlier this season has caught the eye of the Chelsea hierarchy,

This is despite the wealth of attacking options that Roman Abramovich’s club possess in their armoury but a sign of a big club, is the hunger to always try and improve, even on world-class quality.

With all of this said, football.london brings you all the latest regarding what is currently going on with the 24-year-old as we are now more than a week into the 2022 January transfer window.

Chiesa’s serious injury

Chelsea’s reported pursuit of Juventus attacker Federico Chiesa may have to be put on hold for the time being.

Chiesa was extremely impressive against the west Londoners in the Champions League group stage earlier this season, delivering a man-of-the-match display during a 1-0 win in Turin back in September.

The former Fiorentina star even caught the eye of Blues head coach Thomas Tuchel, according to some reports, with Italian journalist Enzo Bucchioni claiming that the reigning champions of Europe are preparing a bid for the talented playmaker.

“Chelsea have decided to take action and offer £71.7m for Federico Chiesa,” Bucchioni said back in November.

“Evidently seeing him play twice closely has removed the last doubts and Tuchel gave the OK and the operation has officially started through intermediaries.”

However, any plans to sign Chiesa, who is valued at £63million on Transfermarkt, in the near future will have been scuppered by his recent injury, with the Italian international suffering an anterior cruciate ligament injury, likely keeping him out for a large chunk of 2022 and ruling out a transfer to Stamford Bridge any time soon.

Juventus statement read: “During yesterday’s match (against AS Roma), Federico Chiesa felt a blunt trauma sprain to his left knee.

“The diagnostic tests performed this morning at J|Medical revealed an injury of the anterior cruciate ligament. It will be necessary for the player to undergo surgery in the next few days.”

The 24-year-old has been in imperious form for the Old Lady since joining in the summer of 2020, providing 18 goals and 14 assists across all competitions.

Chiesa has already turned down Liverpool move

Federico Chiesa was reportedly close to signing for Liverpool in the summer of 2020 before securing a two-year loan move to Juventus.

According to Italian journalist Niccolo Ceccarini, Fiorentina agreed a deal with the Reds for Chiesa’s services, but a deal to take him go Anfield collapsed because it was his dream to play for Juve.

“Fiorentina had reached an agreement with Liverpool for £59.7m, but the negotiations did not go through due to the boy’s desire to go to Juventus,” Ceccarini told Viola News.

Surprise Federico Chiesa verdict

Juventus boss Max Allegri might have inadvertently suggested that Chelsea should not pursue Federico Chiesa after the Italian scored the winner in their Champions League clash on Wednesday.

It was certainly ironic that Chiesa ended up being the goalscorer and the match-winner, with the Italian having been linked with a move to Chelsea throughout the summer transfer window.

Previous reports suggested that the Blues had an £85million bid rejected for the 23-year-old earlier this year.

However, Juventus boss Max Allegri has dropped a surprise revelation that could deter Chelsea in returning for his signature, with Chiesa having led the line against the Blues.

Talking after the clash in Turin, he said: “He is absolutely not at 100 per cent and this was the first real time he has played as a centre-forward. I told Federico my evaluation, which is that he can play as a centre-forward or a support striker.”

With the depth in the striking area, do they really need another number 9 type of player to add to their congested squad roster in the attacking positions?

‘Bid rejected’

Chiesa is currently on a two-year loan deal from Fiorentina, and Juventus have the option to make the deal permanent for a fee of €40m (£34.2m) plus €10m (£8.5m) in add-ons which they are expected to trigger regardless of whether they feel his long-term future is in Turin.

Chelsea reportedly had a €100m (£85m) rejected in the summer by Juventus, which would show just how highly they value their star man.

Sports Illustrated state that the Blues’ offer was turned down, and Chiesa wanted to stay in Turin this summer.

Liverpool interest

Liverpool are also said to carry an interest in the young star, as well as German giants Bayern Munich. However, Sport Illustrated state that no formal offer was made by the Reds, despite them making their interest known to the player.

Chiesa is said to have turned down the approach from the winners of the 2019 Champions League, and would reject any move away from Juventus.

Juve’s money troubles

There is one thing that could seemingly convince the Italian side to consider a sale.

The Italian club posted losses of €210m (£179m) in their most recent financial results, and have been moving to get big-wage players off the books.

A period of overspending meant they were open to a sale of Cristiano Ronaldo this summer for around £13.5m – just three years after signing him for an initial £88m.

Second bid planned

Despite Chiesa seemingly being set on a long stay in Turin, Calciomercato report that the Blues will bring “another assault” for him over the next few months.
