Bayer Leverkusen chief, Rudi Voller gives fresh transfer update on Kai Havertz to Chelsea

Chelsea are hoping to sign Kai Havertz this summer and Bayer Leverkusen chief Rudi Voller has reiterated his warning that the versatile midfielder will not be sold unless Frank Lampard’s side meet his valuation.

Leverkusen are standing firm with their £90million price tag – but that is £20m more than the west Londoners are willing to pay.

The Bundesliga side insisted they would not do any business until their Europa League campaign came to an end.

They were knocked out of the European competition in the quarter-finals with a 2-1 defeat against Inter Milan on Monday.

That loss has opened the door for Havertz to move on – but Chelsea have yet to make a formal approach for the 21-year-old.

“I like to repeat myself when I emphasise that we are talking about a wonderful footballer,” Voller told Kicker.

“There is no new status in this personnel. It is clear and amicable with him and his advisors that he can only switch on certain terms. Otherwise, he will stay.”

After being dumped out of the Europa League, Leverkusen boss Peter Bosz joked that Havertz would snub Chelsea for a shock switch.

“Yes, I can exclusively announce he’ll play for [Dutch outfit] Heracles Almelo,” Bosz, who previously coached Heracles in two separated spells, said.

Meanwhile, Voller was disappointed with some of his senior players for not turning up on the big occasion in Germany.

“We had hoped for more, especially in this competition,” he added. “We lost to a very good team and knew beforehand that it would be difficult.

“But our performance, it has to be said clearly, was not what we can do.

“A few players made an inhibited impression. I don’t know why.

“Was it nervous? We will talk about it and analyse it.”

ESPN pundit Gab Marcotti claims Chelsea will take their time to conclude a deal for Havertz.

“I don’t think Chelsea are in any particular rush,” he said. “I don’t think Chelsea feel they need Kai Havertz considering the players they’ve already added, Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech are already there, Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, the list goes on and on.

“But equally Chelsea are saying if there’s a chance they can get him at a price they like and at terms they like, yeah they’ll go for it.

“I don’t think Chelsea are going to budge from their position or inch forwards.”
